It has been a year ago since I started developing websites utilizing the Drupal Content Management System. For a brief introduction, Drupal, as we all know, is one of the widely used Content Management Systems. You can try Joomla, PhpNuke, Mambo, and all those other flavors of CMS, but it is Drupal that I frequently use. Website creation and development in Drupal revolves around its modules. What you want your website to display is basically through the Drupal Modules. Some might be provided by default, and some are in Drupal’s website for you to download and install. As a freelance developer, I have used numerous modules of Drupal and here are some of the few modules that I recommend to have a tick on your module list checkboxes.

CCK (Content Construction Kit) – You can’t have your website if you don’t have content fields. Put some custom Content fields to make your Contents more detailed.

Panels – Customize and personalize your pages’ layout for a better look on your website.

Views and Views Bonus Pack – If you have listing pages, this module is useful to add a more customized list. Includes table, grid and node listing features.

Image API – For high-end processing schemes of images and photos that your website supports.

Blog and Blog API – For basic portfolio websites with avid blogger authors, you might include this in your list. This is one of the stock modules of Drupal

Forums – For community websites, a community discussion board might be useful. This is also a stock module of Drupal

PrivateMsg – Another module that allows sending messages between users for community websites.

Buddylist and Invite – If you are creating a social networking website, this modules are where to start best.

Voting and Voting API – These modules provide voting and rating functionalities for your post nodes and contents.

Workflow-ng – Works like database triggers. Allows more functions to be attached together with other functions for a more flexible site.

You can download these modules thru Drupal’s official Module Download section or at drupalmodules.com.

I created this prank program (just for fun) and also at the same time, learn controlling hardware devices, through C#.NET. This program is quite simple; as soon as the program starts, your disc tray ejects and closes and the PC speaker beeps for a second, and this entire routine is executed endlessly. Of course, it ends if the application closes/exits.

For this program, you will need to import the following:

    using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
    using System.Text;

Next, insert this block of code inside your C# class and outside any method:

[DllImport("winmm.dll", EntryPoint = "mciSendStringA", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi)]
protected static extern int mciSendString(string lpstrCommand, StringBuilder lpstrReturnString, int uReturnLength, IntPtr hwndCallback);

[DllImport("KERNEL32.DLL", EntryPoint = "Beep")]
public static extern bool Beep(int tone, int length);

Lastly, key in this code in your Main() or any method that you wish to call to trigger the opening and closing of cd tray and beeping of the speaker:

while (true)
{
    int ret = mciSendString("set cdaudio door open", null, 0, IntPtr.Zero);
    Beep(1000, 1000);
    ret = mciSendString("set cdaudio door closed", null, 0, IntPtr.Zero);
    Beep(1000, 1000);
}

There you have it. Basically, the important part of this program is when you make the CD ROM drive open and close and the PC Speaker beep. You can use this minor code block in the second and last blockquotes to any program that you wish to make. I just made this tutorial fun and enjoying. Learning is best when it is fun. :)

It was just a few months ago that I have decided to develop my own website. I decided to use Drupal for this to be able to exhaust Drupal’s full capability as a Content Management System. Since I already of an existing Domain Name and blog account in Blogspot (or Blogger), I wanted to migrate my blog entries from Blogspot to Drupal. So far, I haven’t found a direct and straightforward solution to this but I have discovered another way. This involves only a few clicks and soon enough you’ll just realize, the migration is complete. Also note that this is only applicable to Drupal version 5.x. Here are the things/installations that you will be needing:

A Blogger/Blogspot blog site (of course, where will get your data if you have none)

Drupal site (a local site will do)

WordPress blog account (this will be our bridge)

Some Drupal modules. All available at the Drupal Modules download section.

And here are the steps:

Prepare and setup your Drupal locally.

If you have an existing WordPress account (the free account will do), this has an import feature that allows you to migrate your Blogspot blog entries to WordPress.

After importing has completed and now that your Blogspot blogs are in your WordPress, you can proceed by exporting your WordPress blog entries (that was previously blogspot entires). Again, WordPress has another Export feature included for you to be able to do this. WordPress allows you to export your entries to an XML file.

Next, you need to download and install into your prepared Drupal site the WordPress Import Module. Go to your Drupal Adminstration section and select on the WordPress Import, select the exported XML file and proceed with the import. Click on your drupal blog section and there you have your Blogspot imported to Drupal.

I hope this tutorial is useful for you. This solution worked for me and I hope it would work for you too.

I apologize if some readers could not understand my tutorial. Hence, in this entry, I would like to re-iterate on this tutorials and added some graphics to understand the tutorial more fully.

Open the page of your selected play list

Click on the “Play this playlist” link

Download and open playlist file with your choice of music player (For me, I will be using Winamp). Select the song and open it’s File Information Dialog Box (Or any option that would view it’s file/stream information

Simply copy the file location and paste it into the address field of your web browser (For this tutorial, I will be demonstrating with Mozilla Firefox).

As soon as you open this URL, you will be prompted to download the song. Simply click on “OK” and start the download.

There you have it. You are now downloading the song! :)

As I have mentioned in my original post, this download procedure might not work if you are using download accelerators such as Flashget and the like. Hope you are guided accordingly. Also, before downloading, make sure you have appropriate media rights and license to those music. This site does not hold responsible for any illegal actions because of irresponsible downloading. The main intention of this tutorial is for educational purposes.

There you go. I hope this tutorial entry gives more help to the download addicts out there. Please drop by a comment for any ambiguity or irrelevance to my post. Thanks and hope you could visit my blog more often.

And btw, credits to my friend (Denise Subido). I used her Multiply page for this tutorial. And of course, for Multiply, as the subject of this tutorial. ;)

Since then, I have been very fond of downloading songs, videos, movies and applications from the internet. One of my download source is Multiply. Just recently that multiply has noticed the increase in up-speed traffic (due to user downloads), or maybe for some other reasons, they have disabled download links in all user playlists. It can’t be helped that I was really looking for a way to download songs from such website. Hence, I have found a way to be able to download. Below are the steps for you to be able to download your wanted songs:

Open the playlist of the song from Multiply. Look for the “Play this playlist” link located somewhere at the latter of the playlist page. Click on this link and open the downloaded playlist file with your desired music player.

Select on the song from your music player’s playlist and open its File Information and copy the File Location and paste it into your browser’s address field.

As soon as you enter this as URL, confirm download of the file to continue with the download process.

It s not advised to use a download accelerator for this process. Multiply’s system might detect it as a direct file download instead of a Music Stream. However, I recommend Firefox as browser to be used in this download process since Firefox has its own accelerator plug-in for you to be able to download faster. Hope this works for you and please leave a comment. Thanks.

I myself am a programmer by hobby and profession. I have gone through the dos and don’ts in development. Throughout my 5 years in the programming industry, I have summarize my learnings in Application and Web Development in five (5) main points. I hope this could help you in your development career as future programmers.

The Database Class – If you are developing a database driven application for the desktop or for the web. It is helpful to create your own Database class. It is a simple template that you would simply call whenever you need to connect to your database server. Once you have this class or function, it is now easy to gather your data and compressing your five or more lines of code into one function call. By this, it improves system architecture and derives an N-Tier type of system architecture.

A Class for the Major Tables in the Database – As an expansion to the item prior to this item, it could be convenient to represent major tables in your database as classes and make use of them as objects throughout the whole program. By this, data referencing could be more convenient.

Look and Feel and CSS – Moving to the front-end aspect of your development, impress your system users and site visitors with impressive GUI Design and Web Template Layout. Use significant colors with good color combinations. If you are in the Web Design and Development Industry, utilize the useful options and styles of the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for you to be able to produce better results.

Modularize and Normalize – Going back to the back-end modularize and structure your code properly for better readability. When the time comes that you now have a lengthy program and code, it would be easier to look back at a clean code without any headache at all. Of course, the most important is to Normalize your Database properly. Better normalization results to less redundant and more significant data on your database.

Conventions – So goes the code, so goes the program. Make use of uniform and practical naming and coding convention for your scripts, functions, and classes. With good and uniform naming and coding convention, debugging is easier and code modification will be more convenient.

So there you have it, my Top-5 Programmers guideline in application and web development. I do not wish to enforce all programmers who will be able to read this entry to make use and follow the same convention as I do. This is for me to suggest and share my convenient means in development. I hope you gained and learning from this entry. I encourage comments to be posted for me to also learn from others.
